Now, before you say “both” - I think reader fatigue is a thing, or tl;dr wouldn’t exist. Part of good writing is learning how to clearly express things in a concise format. But some people really dig word content, and others are visual.
So what are you, Oppo? Are you visual, or literal? Do you like crayons? Are they tasty? Are cucumbers genuinely better pickled? Let me know.

Cucumbers are better pickled. I hate regular cucumbers, but love kosher dill pickles.

For this post? Neither. A poll would do nicely.

If words are the “meat and potatoes” of an article, then pictures are kind of like seasoning. Words are essential, but pictures can make an article much easier and enjoyable to “consume”.
I LOVE pictures. Not just for visual stimulation, but sometimes you just need to see something for yourself. It helps with absorption, too. Sometimes information can be delivered better, easier, and faster at a glance, rather than spelling it all out in text. “A picture is worth a thousand words” and all that...
How to find the right balance, though? I don’t know. I guess one pic every... hm, let’s say... oh, three to five paragraphs? Yeah, that’s pretty good, I think. It should be spaced out, too. Kinja doesn’t let us do slideshow galleries anyway (I think FP authors can, though), so it’s better to sprinkle pics throughout a post.

Depends on format. I read a lot of real, paper books, mostly nonfiction, none of which have pictures, and if they’re engaging I don’t care if they’re long. They take me elsewhere and cultivate my imagination. If I’m scrolling through a news site or story, I like mostly literal because, for example, a picture of Mitch McConnell walking down a hallway does not explain what is happening on Capitol Hill on any given day. I prefer long-form journalism that tells a story in depth. Not necessarily high word count, but whatever it takes to give all the information relevant to the story, maybe a few useful pictures. The exception is something like a trip report on Overland or a Speedhunters feature, then give me all the pictures. Little news bites are part of our problem, people react to headlines and the first sentence without understanding an issue.
If it’s Kinja, give me pictures and dank memes because scrolling sucks.
Pickles Crayons are delicious.

I tried, but the embedding failed no matter how I tried to tweak the html. I tried another and the link failed to preview properly. I thought about it and decided some other stuff going on had to come first. I humbly apologize and aspire to be better.

Maybe I’ll change my alias to Pickles Crayons so that people will take my content more seriously.

I find it really circumstantial that you somehow managed to post this twice.
